Personal PF Interview with Natalie from Debt and the Girl

What inspired you to become a PF blogger?

I have always had a habit of reading financial journalism on the Internet. It may sound strange but reading economic articles has always been fun to me. I know! I am weird. Anyways, one day I clicked on the link to a personal financial blog from someone who is well respected in the blogging community that was on the web page of an article I was reading, and I became hooked. I soon began reading personal finance blogs instead and became very interested in what people had to say and what they did to conquer debt and get their lives on track. At the time, I had a significant amount of credit card debt so I was curious how others had paid off their huge piles of debt. I became instantly inspired. I soon realized I wanted to share my story and hold myself accountable for my money decisions so that I didn’t commit the same mistakes again. I started blogging in April of 2012 and I haven’t looked back.

What message do you hope people will take away from your blog?

I would hope that they learn to try and live within their means as much as possible. I want others to understand that we all have different paths in life and what’s right for you might not be right for someone else. I think everyone (myself included) has the tendency to judge before knowing the whole story. I would hope that people get some kind of motivation to do something about their financial futures today—especially those that are just starting out in life. Most of all, I would hope that people be appreciative for what they have (financially and everything else) as there are always people in worse shape.

Do you have any advice for people who start their own blogs?

I would tell people that it will take time for you to get followers and really make a name for yourself. If you have a passion for sharing your story and writing, then keeping a blog may be great for you. Try and do your best to establish yourself in the blogging community. Most everyone is really nice and supportive. Go out of your way to comment on blogs that hold a significance to you and you will find that is a great way for people to get to know you. Don’t be shy. The more you do to communicate, the more chance you have to build connections within the personal finance blogosphere.

What is the one thing you wish you knew before you started your blog?

I tried a little more in the beginning to sound a little too professional. I would look at other very successful blogs and thought that I was supposed to be like that. I learned over time that it was my story and everyday happenings that seemed to resonate the most with readers. To be honest, anyone can go on MSN money or Yahoo if they wanted learn more about finance. Most people visit personal finance blogs because they can relate to the author—not just learn about general economics. I find that the blogs I like most are also the ones where the author really put him/her self into the writing. Always add a personal touch as it seems to be what people appreciate most.

Thank you Sicorra from Tackling our Debt for this opportunity to share my story!
